Pre-Bake InstructionsPreheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Mince your candied ginger and set aside. |
Wet Ingredients InstructionsIn a bowl beat the powdered sugar and vanilla extract with the softened butter until creamy. Beat in your egg into the wet ingredients. (REALLY whisk it) |
Dry Ingredients InstructionsIn a separate bowl sift in your 2 cups of flour, salt and baking soda. Mix well. Toss your morsels and minced candied ginger with the dry ingredients to avoid clumping and sticking. 1/2 cup at a time add in your dry ingredients to your wet ingredients. Mix well. Once your dough is well mixed, portion them out and roll them into 1 inch balls. |
Cinnamon Sugar Coating InstructionsIn a bowl mix your white sugar and cinnamon together until homogeneous. Add 2 to 4 balls at a time to the bowl and toss your dough ball in the cinnamon sugar. Once coated place the dough balls onto a baking sheet coated with parchment paper. Once all balls are coated and placed onto the baking sheet flatten the dough with a glass coated with the excess cinnamon sugar. Sprinkle any excess cinnamon sugar onto of the flattened dough balls if desired. |
Baking InstructionsOnce the oven is heated place the cookies in the oven for 10 minutes or until light golden brown. Once done baking place onto a cooling sheet until room temperature and ready to be enjoyed. |

Cool... *Ahem*
My biggest goal in this project wasn't actually visual accuracy, as the game seems to be using the same chocolate chip cookie model for all cookie models. I wanted to go more so off of the Mouthpiece's vibe as a kindly old grandma that bakes you cookies and knits. Because even if you ignore the promotional comics featuring her or the ARG factoids... In the fight against her, knitting and cookies are very much present in her attacks. She scolds you for roughhousing too much with her, or that you don't call as much as you should. So when it came to the taste profile i wanted to do something somebodies grandmother would make while adhering to the "Ginger Tar and Crude Oil Morsels" name.
Ginger tar was actually the easiest part to discern, though the trickiest to pull off. I wanted bits of candied ginger, as it's a rather dated snack. My great grandmother ate a lot of candied ginger whenever she got sea-sick or nauseous in general or even as a treat. Though what got me tripped up was the tar bit. In my initial run of the recipe I used Ginger chew candy pieces which in my mind, would be delicious. I was mostly right. Unfortunately while the spiced and sweetness of the candy was phenomenal, it totally melted and became much too chewy and kinda hard? It wasn't very pleasant. So I had opted for something like crystalized ginger, which has a much firmer texture that kept its shape in the heat.
But i can hear you say. Prism why the sweet and salty hell are the other bits. Why the butterscotch and cinnamon sugar? For those I went the easy realm of, what would balance out the bite of the ginger while also feeling a bit.. "old" and i though butterscotch chips! especially since they're morsels. the butterscotch morsels have a bit of a alcohol based extract taste to them rather than traditional butterscotch made by hand. which is pretty damn good with the sharpness of the ginger. But something felt missing. it wasnt Grandma enough. And what's one of the most grandma cookies ever? Snickerdoodles! that's why the cinnamon sugar and butterscotch. also its just a really good flavor combination... the reason i chose specifically the powdered sugar cookie dough was because of the fluffy texture.
I wanted the vibe of the cookie to be this fluffy cookie with cinnamon and zingy ginger and creamy butterscotch. The kinda cookie you KNOW grandma has in the cookie jar and are willing LIFE AND LIMB to get one because even though the flavors are old fashioned and a bit odd.. they're made with grandmotherly love..
so obviously they're delicious!
If you read all that, thank you for delving into the madness of my brain. I HOPE it made SOME SENSE. if not, then oops? For your patience ive provided you with a proper back button :3 |
